Puss In Boots

Puss In Boots Early Postcard

Almost every country has a version of this fairy tale. The story of a poor millers son being assisted on a journey to power and wealth by his cunning cat. In England we know the cat as Puss In Boots, his master as Dick Whittington, and we have a tradition of treating children to a Christmas theatre visit to enjoy a pantomime production of the story. Unusually for a fairy tale, it's a story in which deceit and trickery wins.

In the western world the Puss In Boots story is said to originate from a seventeenth century French fairy tale by Charles Perrault. "Le Maistre Chat, ou le Chat Botté". With other 'helper animal' folklore the story is also known outside of Western culture and it's origin will possiby never be known.
